lightbulb The Basics
Fill-In Crossword (also known as "Criss-Cross") gives you a crossword grid and a list of words — but no clues. Your job is to figure out where each word fits based on word length, letter intersections, and process of elimination.
One letter is pre-filled as a starting hint (shown in blue). All words in the bank must be placed into the grid. Words interlock at shared letters, just like a traditional crossword.
touch_app How to Place Words
Step 1: Click a white cell in the grid. The word slot passing through that cell highlights in blue, and a cursor appears showing where your next letter will go.
Step 2: If the cell is at an intersection (where across and down slots cross), click the same cell again or press Tab to toggle direction. You can also use the Across/Down buttons below the grid.
Using the Word Bank: Click a word from the Word Bank that matches the slot's length. The word fills into the highlighted cells instantly.
Typing directly: With a slot selected, simply type letters on your keyboard. The cursor advances automatically after each letter. Use Backspace to delete, and arrow keys to move the cursor within the slot.
Removing words: Click on any cell containing a placed word to remove it and return it to the bank. Typed letters can be deleted with Backspace.
speed Difficulty Levels
7 words with clear intersections. Many slots have unique lengths, reducing ambiguity.
8 words. Some slots share the same length, requiring you to use intersections to deduce placement.
9 words with more overlapping lengths. You'll need to think several steps ahead.
10 words packed into a dense grid. Multiple words share lengths and letters — true deductive puzzling.
tips_and_updates Tips & Strategies
- 1. Start with unique lengths. If only one word in the bank has 6 letters and there's only one 6-cell slot, it must go there. Place these first.
- 2. Use the hint letter. The pre-filled blue letter tells you which word passes through that cell. Check which words contain that letter at the right position.
- 3. Work from intersections. Once you place a word, its letters become constraints for crossing words. Look for slots where the placed letters narrow down the options.
- 4. Count and compare. Group words by length in your head. If three 5-letter words exist but only three 5-cell slots, try each combination.
- 5. Don't be afraid to undo. If you get stuck, remove a word and try a different arrangement. Sometimes backtracking reveals the correct solution.
